1月13日，据柬埔寨媒体报道，两名中国人12日在柬埔寨首都金边一个公寓遇害。视频拍下两人生前最后画面，两人疑似被人挟持走进案发公寓。男性死者外号“波波”，与女性死者是情侣关系。当地警方通过监控已锁定两名嫌疑人的身份，警方推测凶手的身份可能是中国人，并且与被害人相熟，警方正对此事展开进一步调查。
据《柬中时报》报道称，事件发生在金边市桑园区百适河分区澜海总裁公寓，死者为一男一女，男性死者肖某（音译，38岁）湖南人，一家钢铁厂高层，女性死者为曹某（音译，23岁）辽宁人，两人是情侣关系。报道称这对中国情侣遭残忍杀害，凶手作案手段极度残暴。从案发公寓的闭路电视可见，男死者和女死者分别被相信是凶手的两人一前一后押回公寓，其中男死者在前，疑似被凶手用枪顶住后腰，而女死者在后，被另一名凶手持刀抵住喉咙。四人回到公寓后，男女死者相信被杀害，过后两名凶手逃离，而死者尸体被打扫卫生的公寓清洁工发现后，清洁工随即报警。
据《吴哥时报》报道，“波波”已被仇家追杀多日，一度找中间人调停但未果，两人最后被劫持到公寓杀害。
14日晚，中国外交部领事保护中心官方微博发布消息称，中国驻柬埔寨大使馆获悉两名中国公民后，第一时间联系柬内政部了解情况，要求柬警方全力侦破案件，并将协助遇害者家属处理善后事宜。
