1月13日，据欧联社综合报道，由于卢森堡外相和欧盟各主要领导人拒绝同意接见美国国务卿蓬佩奥，蓬佩奥在星期二于最后一刻取消了访问欧洲的行程。路透社报道，这是欧盟外交官和熟悉处理彭佩奥访问欧洲的官员们透露的。
蓬佩奥原计划欧洲窜访在布鲁塞尔会见欧盟主要领导人和欧盟负责外交事务的最高官员，然后去卢森堡会见外相阿瑟博恩。
蓬佩奥欧洲窜访计划首先在卢森堡方面出现了问题。卢森堡官员不愿意给蓬佩奥安排任何会见。卢森堡外交部证实原先是有蓬佩奥的访问行程，但是现在取消了。卢森堡方面不愿意说明原因。
同时布鲁塞尔这边，欧盟也不安排与蓬佩奥的会面，北约也不安排与任何蓬佩奥相关的公开行程。蓬佩奥原来准备在星期三晚间在北约秘书长斯拖尔滕贝格的住宅共进私人晚餐，然后与北约盟友比利时外相会面。但这些活动全部取消。
