1月16日，约1万名新冠病毒怀疑论者在首都维也纳市中心示威，抗议政府实施旨在阻止疫情传播的限制措施，并要求总理库尔茨辞职。同日，还有约500人举行了反示威的抗议活动，谴责反对口罩的愚蠢行为，双方一度发生冲突。这些抗议者还在维也纳不同地方举行了两次集会。
大多数抗议者无视警方要求他们戴口罩、遵守社交距离规定，反而用亲吻、拥抱和跳舞的方式互相问候，其中包括极右派政治人物、前副总理史特拉赫（Heinz-Christian Strache）。这些人还手举写着“库尔茨必须下台”“让流感再次伟大起来（模仿即将离任的美国总统特朗普的口号）”字样的横幅。
法新社称，去年12月18日，奥地利政府决定从12月26日至2021年1月17日再次实施严格的全面“封锁”措施。此次抗议正值库尔茨领导的政府就延长限制措施进行商讨之际。奥地利公共卫生专家在与政府官员会面后表示，该国目前的新冠感染率太高，新冠疫情仍在奥地利蔓延，因此不能考虑放松限制。一个专家小组向总理库尔茨建议，鉴于感染人数仍未出现减缓迹象，目前的防疫限制不应按原计划于1月25日开始放松，专家小组还建议，应强制要求人们在家工作，并延长封锁时间。奥地利政府原定于当地时间17日宣布下一步防疫措施。
据世界新冠病毒数据实时监测系统显示，截至1月17日拥有890万人口的奥地利自疫情开始以来，已有将近40万人感染病毒，7082人死亡阿尔卑斯山区国家奥地利为了控制住疫情，现正实施去年3月以来第3波封锁令，非必要商家、音乐厅和剧院、运动中心和学校全都得关门。
