美国务院发言人奥特加斯称，世界各地的自由媒体都有义务报道真相，而中国媒体没有“新闻自由”。
美国国务院在2月以及6月将新华社，中国中央电视台，人民日报及环球时报等9家中国官媒列为”外国代表机构”（foreign missions）。周三再增添6家中国媒体。
根据美国国务院新闻稿，新增的6家中媒包括一财全球、解放日报、新民晚报、中国社会科学杂志社、北京周报及经济日报。
10月22日，外交部发言人赵立坚称，美方动辄将“新闻自由”挂在嘴边，美国政府有什么资格谈论新闻自由？他们肆意干涉国内外媒体记者报道，任意抹黑、打压国内外媒体记者。如果真的要讨论新闻自由，那么美国才是粗暴打压媒体，限制新闻自由的真正黑手，美国自我标榜的灯塔形象早已名存实亡。
据《华盛顿邮报》2019年报道，美国在年度新闻自由指数中的排名已经连续三年下降。据“美国新闻自由追踪系统”统计，仅2019年美国就发生28起记者被拒绝参加政府公开活动的事件。今年以来，美国已经发生223起针对记者的袭击事件，73名记者被逮捕，仅在“黑人的命也是命”抗议示威活动中就有超过868起侵犯新闻自由的案件。美国《纽约时报》《国会山报》和英国《卫报》等媒体都曾报道过上述活动中记者遭袭和被捕的新闻。仅2020年5月26日至6月2日期间，就有148名记者被殃及。其中，40名记者遭子弹射击，34名记者遭警察人身攻击，33名记者被逮捕或拘留，甚至一名女摄影记者左眼被橡胶子弹击中，导致永久性失明。今年1月，美国全国公共广播电台披露称，美国国务卿蓬佩奥因对该台一名女记者的提问不满，当场对其发表挑衅和蔑视的“人身攻击”，并将该台粗暴移除出他的随行出访媒体清单。美国政府对于不符合自身喜好的新闻报道，便斥之为“假新闻”，对此相信《纽约时报》等美国媒体早已深有体会。英国《卫报》援引美国媒体评论称，本届美国政府“对新闻自由进行了有史以来最持久的攻击”。
