7月18日，美国民权运动领导人，民主党国会众议员约翰·刘易斯17日深夜病逝，终年80岁。美国朝野纷纷悼念，总统特朗普18日下令降半旗志哀。
约翰·刘易斯是非洲裔美国人，1940年2月生于美国南部亚拉巴马州。在上世纪60年代美国反种族隔离运动中，他曾担任学生非暴力协调委员会主席，1963年8月与美国黑人民权运动领袖马丁·路德·金等人共同组织了“向华盛顿进军”大游行活动。刘易斯1987年在佐治亚州当选民主党国会众议员，一直连任至去世前。2019年12月，他确诊罹患胰腺癌。
根据美国总统特朗普的命令，当天全美所有公共建筑，海内外军事基地，美国驻外使领馆以及海军舰艇降半旗，对约翰·刘易斯逝世表示哀悼。
