该项研究由哈里珀·金斯医学研究所的德菲尔（Ciara Duffy）博士带领的团队进行，并在英国医学杂志《自然精密肿瘤学》上发表。德菲尔希望其发现日后能帮助科学家对三阴性乳癌治疗方法作进一步研究。德菲尔指出，蜜蜂毒液中一种叫做蜂毒素（melittin）的成分，对有关癌细胞具有杀伤力。其中，特定浓度的蜜蜂毒液可以诱导癌细胞100%死亡，而对正常细胞的影响却很小，天然蜂毒肽可在60分钟内完全破坏癌细胞的细胞膜，人工合成的蜂毒肽抑制癌细胞表现非常接近天然蜂毒肽。
但研究人员强调，这些研究目前只是个开始，还需要在此基础上对蜂毒肽的最佳投放方式以及人体对蜂毒肽的耐受性等做进一步研究才能应用于临床。
