大批支持者在法庭上举行抗议，阿桑奇的合伙人，南非律师斯特拉·莫里斯也出庭受审。人权组织和言论自由组织称，朱利安的案件对言论自由和新闻自由产生了巨大的影响。这是对新闻界的攻击。如果他因为公布有关伊拉克和阿富汗战争的令人不快的真相而被引渡到美国，那么这将开创一个先例，任何英国记者或出版商将来都可能被引渡。
联合国酷刑问题特别报告员尼尔斯·梅尔泽说，阿桑奇有与长期遭受心理折磨有关的所有症状，不应被引渡到美国。
听证会将持续四周，地区法官作出的任何决定都可以向上级法院提出上诉。
阿桑奇创建的维基解密网站2010年曝光涉及阿富汗战争和伊拉克战争大量机密文件。阿桑奇同年被指控在瑞典期间涉嫌对两名女性进行性骚扰和强奸，受到瑞典检方调查。英国最高法院2012年裁定可以将阿桑奇引渡至瑞典，由于担心瑞典将自己引渡到美国，阿桑奇同年6月走入位于伦敦的厄瓜多尔驻英国使馆，在使馆内寻求政治庇护。于2019年4月11日厄瓜多尔大使馆剥夺了他作为政治庇护者的地位。遭英国警方逮捕，关押在贝尔马什监狱。
