据黎巴嫩媒体报道，黎巴嫩首都贝鲁特8日发生大规模示威活动，示威者与警方发生激烈冲突，造成至少1人死亡，238人受伤，包括示威者和警察。当天数以千计的示威者聚集在贝鲁特市中心，抗议贝鲁特港口区发生大爆炸以及当局腐败等。居民抱怨政府的疏忽导致这场灾难，对这场爆炸感到愤怒的示威者向警方投掷石块、烟雾弹等。示威过程中，一些示威者闯入黎巴嫩外交部，经济部以及环境部大楼，并对一些车辆或建筑物等纵火。安全部队发射催泪瓦斯，试图驱散示威者。
黎巴嫩民众早已对政府的腐败和无能恨之入骨，黎巴嫩这几年经济急剧恶化，货币贬值80%，35%的年轻人失业，民众生活跌入贫困。
自这起灾难爆发后，两名官员已辞职。国会议员哈玛德（Marwan Hamadeh）在星期三（5日）辞职。黎巴嫩驻约旦大使特雷西·查蒙（Jordan Tracy Chamoun）则在星期四（6日）辞职，他表示，这起灾难表明，黎巴嫩的领导阶层需要改变。
黎巴嫩在第一次世界大战后，成为法国委任统治地，直到1943年11月22日法国帮助黎巴嫩建国。所以黎巴嫩历次爆发严重危机，法国领导人都会在第一时间提供支持。
法国马克龙周四（6日）率领三架飞机和急救人员及物资到黎巴嫩。他到贝鲁特港爆炸现场时，现场大批民众要求他帮忙推翻现黎巴嫩政府，一片呼声要求绞死政界全体人士，高呼：救救我们，你是我们唯一的希望，请别给我们腐败的政府捐款，帮助我们，革命。
马克龙呼吁黎巴嫩当局进行深刻体制改革，打击腐败，对这次大爆炸进行国际调查。但是黎巴嫩总统奥恩拒绝国际调查，他表示，这次大爆炸也有可能是某国的导弹造成的。
