最新被美国定为“外国使团”的4家中国媒体分别是：中央电视台，中国新闻社，《人民日报》和《环球时报》。这4家媒体须向美国提交在美国工作员工的名单，并必须申报持有的物业。另外这些中国传媒的部分记者可能会被迫离开美国。
针对美方将中国中央电视台、中新社、《人民日报》、《环球时报》4家中国媒体在美机构列管为“外国使团”，外交部发言人赵立坚23日表示，中方强烈敦促美方摒弃冷战思维、意识形态偏见，立即停止和纠正这种损人不利己的错误做法。否则，中方将不得不作出必要、正当反应。
赵立坚在当日例行记者会上说，这已经是美方第二次将中国媒体在美机构列为“外国使团”了。这是美方赤裸裸对中国媒体政治打压的又一例证，将进一步严重干扰中国媒体在美开展正常报道活动，也进一步暴露出美方标榜的所谓新闻和言论自由的虚伪性。
